December’s selection will be:
The Lion in Winter
by James Goldman
approx. time to read: 60-90 mins

James Goldman’s The Lion in Winter is the basis for the 1968 film for which Katharine Hepburn won an Oscar and follows the Plantagenets, the family who ruled England and much of France in the Middle Ages. When King Henry II holds court one Christmas in 1183 with his estranged queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine along with their three sons, Geoffrey, Richard the Lionheart, and John of Robin Hood fame, it makes for a tumultuous holiday event, something we can all relate to. Parental spats, sibling rivalries, backstabbing, plots, intrigue, and illicit trysts with the King of France— it’s just like your family, except a kingdom is at stake.

Mark your calendars, grab a copy of the play at Townie’s, give it a read and come on the 14th for some fascinating discussion!
